Ready to find out what kind of Leader you can be? Are you interested in the opportunity to develop leadership skills and self confidence in a professional setting, through hands-on experiences, mentoring, and fun activities? If you are, the Hartford Department of Sports & Recreation's Junior Camp Counselor (JCC) Program is the right place for YOU.

We are looking for any interested, new or returning campers ages 13 to 15. The main goal for each JCC is strengthen their self-confidence and grows friendships. The skills learned during
our JCC program will carry you beyond this summer job. They will foster leadership in the communities to which you will belong throughout life including school, college, and in the workplace.

  • Develop Foundational Life Skills: You'll actively build crucial skills like communication, learning how to express yourself clearly and listen effectively. You'll gain assertiveness, understanding how to advocate for yourself and others respectfully. The program will challenge you to engage in problem-solving as unexpected situations arise, and you'll hone your decision-making abilities by considering different options and their consequences.
  • Master Teamwork and Independence: This program provides a unique environment to learn how to collaborate effectively in team settings, understanding roles, responsibilities, and the importance of shared goals. Simultaneously, you'll develop independence by taking initiative, managing tasks, and being responsible for your actions and the campers you guide.
  • Become a Leader and a Follower: You'll gain practical experience in leadership by guiding younger campers, taking on responsibilities, and serving as a positive role model. Equally important, you'll learn the art of good followership – understanding how to support leaders, contribute effectively within a team structure, and learn from others' experiences.
  • Explore Future Career Paths: The program can serve as an introduction to potential careers in youth development, recreation, and education. It specifically encourages JCCs to consider the Hartford Sports & Recreation Dept. as a future career goal, providing valuable experience and insights into this field.
  • Make a Positive Impact: You'll have the chance to positively influence the lives of younger campers, serving as a mentor and role model.
  • Gain Valuable Experience: This program offers hands-on experience in leadership, teamwork, and youth development, which looks great on college applications and future resumes.
